Molson Coors Expands Madrí Excepcional Portfolio with New Lemon Variant

Molson Coors Beverage Company has announced the launch of Madrí Excepcional Limón in the UK, marking a significant strategic move to capitalize on the accelerating global demand for flavored and fruit-infused beers.
According to an official statement from Molson Coors, the new expression is a 3.4% ABV flavored lager that combines the base of Madrí Excepcional with natural lemon flavoring, targeting the “refreshment” occasion that is driving growth in the international beer market.
A Rapid Rise in the World Lager Segment
Since its initial launch in October 2020—developed in partnership with Spain’s La Sagra brewery—Madrí Excepcional has become a central pillar of Molson Coors’ portfolio. Currently available in the UK, Ireland, and Spain, the core brand (4.6% ABV) is characterized as a “modern Euro-lager,” featuring a light golden color and a clean, short bitter finish.
The brand has seen an unprecedented trajectory in the British market. Molson Coors now claims Madrí Excepcional is now the second-largest world lager in total trade by value (CGA & Circana data, 2026). The company emphasizes that the brand has officially reached “billion-pound” status in total trade value.
Tapping into Global Trends: Fruit and Non-Alcoholic
The introduction of Limón is part of a broader strategy to align with two of the most significant shifts in the global brewing industry:
- The Fruit Beer Boom: The fruit beer market is projected to reach approximately $520 million by 2033, as consumers increasingly seek “sessionable” beverages with refreshing flavor profiles.
- The Rise of Temperance: Molson Coors has also aggressively targeted the alcohol-free sector, recently introducing new formats for Madrí Excepcional 0.0%. This aligns with industry forecasts suggesting the non-alcoholic beer market could reach “stout-scale” proportions within the next decade.
Anca Secara, Marketing Controller for Madrí Excepcional at Molson Coors, emphasized the brand’s agility: “We’ve built Madrí Excepcional into a billion-pound brand by staying responsive to the trends we’re seeing in the market. Madrí Excepcional Limón is the next step in that journey—expanding our occasion repertoire while helping retailers meet growing demand for the fruit beer category.”
Lemon vs. Peach: The Battle for Flavor Supremacy
While Molson Coors cites internal research claiming lemon is the flavor with the strongest appeal among fruit beer drinkers, broader market data presents a more nuanced picture.
While citrus remains a staple for refreshing lager hybrids (such as the Radler category), recent market intelligence suggests that peach is currently the “top dog” in terms of growth and consumer preference within the wider fruit beer segment. By opting for lemon, Molson Coors appears to be leaning into the traditional Mediterranean “Radler” heritage associated with Spanish beer culture, rather than the sweeter stone-fruit trends currently sweeping the craft and specialty sectors.
